Clingmans’ Dome: Take exit 74 off of Highway 74/23 onto Highway 441 into Cherokee. Follow the signs for Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Keep going in the park and climb up, up to Newfound Gap. Turn left at Newfound Gap onto the road to Clingman’s Dome. It’s another 7 miles to the end of this road, and you won’t be disappointed at the tremendous views before you! Picnic right there in the parking lot at the edge overlooking the mountains and Fontana Lake. Oh yeah! (Note: Clingman’s Dome is on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, as GSMNP straddles both states.)
